Trio Subtonic is a project from Portland keyboardist and composer Galen Clark, whom HWF fiends will know through our releases from Patterns Fly and Outer Orbit.

The Portland-based genre-bending jazz group releases its seventh full-length album and first vinyl pressing, The Space Around You, on December 8, 2026. It is the group’s first studio release in nearly ten years.

On this album, the trio explores a more experimental and introspective side while retaining the groove-heavy sound and dynamic arrangements that distinguish its earlier discography. Imagined as a collection of soundscape stories spanning the last decade, these songs evoke existential disquiet and the moodiness of attachment in a time of change.

The Space Around You is an uncompromising exploration of weird sounds, infectious grooves, and the playful interaction of the trio’s instrumentation. Featured artists include West Coast standouts Nicole McCabe on alto sax, Andy Coe on guitar, and Cyrus Nabipoor on trumpet.
